The Present of Presence
Presence! What a beautiful gift! At least, most would agree. When one is discouraged, the presence of a friend is helpful. When a child is afraid at night, the presence of a mom or dad is necessary. When a team member feels defeated, the presence of the coach is helpful. At times, the presence of the right person, or maybe just the words of the right person, pulls us through. Presence. What a beautiful gift indeed!
Who is that person for you? Take a moment to thank God for the people in your life whose presence and words always seem to pull you through. Take a moment to thank that special person as well. They may need your encouragement today.
As you thank God for those special people in your life, consider the ultimate gift of presence: God with us. This truth remains central not only to the Advent Season, but for all time. Consider three significant facts of God’s gift of presence. The Scriptures remind us that God became man and dwelled among mankind as “one of us,” to guide us by His grace and truth (John 1:14). The Scriptures also reminds us that Jesus came as the exact representation of God, so that we might truly know God (Hebrews 1:3). The prophecies of the Old Testament were fulfilled in Matthew’s gospel with the announcement that Jesus came to be “God with us,” and to bring salvation from sin (Matthew 1:21-23). Wow! What a blessings of His presence with us: to guide us, to be known by us, and to save us from our sins.
This Christmas Season, celebrate that God has come to earth; He abides with us even now through a personal relationship with Jesus. Jesus, our Savior, is indeed God with us. Open your heart to the ever faithful presence of God. Trust Him to be with you; allow Him to guide your daily steps, control your feelings every minute, and to be the object of your praise with every breath. God’s presence! What a beautiful gift!
